Coach K to Obama: Fast break

Couple of more quotes in the link below from K on his whirlwind publicity tour for his book. He was asked on the radio about his comments concerning Obama’s picking UNC to win it all this year.

“I get in trouble whenever I say anything.”

Cry me a royal blue river, weasel.

Coach K on Colbert Report

WATCH IT HERE

In the opening seconds it was:

“They might have made the Final Four if they were called the ‘Blue Jesuses’”

Then at the beginning of the segment, it was:

“He may have lost the NCAA tournament, but he’s one of my final four guests of the week.”

Thank you Stephen Colbert.

Coach K was on the Colbert Report last night. The PR master himself was promoting his book on coaching the Olympic basketball team, “The Gold Standard: Building a world class team.”

Gag me. At least Colbert wore a Carolina blue tie.

There was another shining moment for UNC, though as Colbert asked K who was the best player he ever coached. K referred to his time as an assistant for the 1992 Dream Team.

“Jordan is the best ever,” he said.

“Did you make him run suicides?” asked Colbert.

“It would be suicide if we didn’t have him on the team”

Yes. Yes. Yes. Probably felt like suicide about 10 years before that when frosh Jordan hit the game winner in the ‘82 National Championship, too. Anyway I guess I can’t get too critical of K for writing the book because Chuck Daly, the ‘92 coach, also wrote one about his team of All-Stars. People are probably interested to read about the team.

BUT.

The book is coming out now, in the third week of April. The Olympics were in August. So between September and, oh I don’t know giving some time for editing, MARCH. Coach has been writing a book about “building a world class team.”

This tells me two things: 1) Coach K thinks he played a huge part in the gold medal because the title suggests the book is about how he BUILT a team (using NBA superstars was merely coincidental) and 2) He was writing this during Duke’s entire season! Unless he somehow managed to write the entire book in the month of September, he was definitely taking time away from the Dukies to write. No wonder they didn’t get past the Sweet 16 yet again.

I’m not saying it’s impossible to write a book in a month, but from the timing of the release, I’m guessing there was work to be done in the meantime between September and now. Way to go, weasel.

Paulus playing football?

Duke Blue Devils coach says Greg Paulus could try out at receiver – ESPN.

One phrase pretty much sums up this story to me:

Classic Coach K PR move

Here’s my 100 percent raw speculation on the subject. K has a coaching friend or two in football — I’m guessing in state of Michigan. K calls them up and says:

“Hey, man. My boy down here used to play football. Why don’t you come down and give him a look, no pressure. You don’t have to sign him, hell, you don’t even have to watch him closely in the workout as long as I can say you did. We’ll make a weekend of it. I know you like that North Carolina Bar-B-Que!

K’s friend, who does in fact love N.C. BBQ, is tired of the current frigid Michigan spring and decides that might not be a bad idea. Friend looks at Paulus, friend eats Q and friend goes home.

Coach K is happy as a clam. The story is all over ESPN and drawing attention to Duke. This attention is somewhat positive and draws attention away from his Blue Devils bowing out in the Sweet 16 yet AGAIN

Once again, Coach K makes it seem he is running a national contender, after all his kids can play football, too. Isn’t that what matters when you’re recruiting basketball players?

Puhleez.

Do something impressive like bolding words in a blog post for emphasis……or winning two national championships in five years, maybe?

Ed Davis To Return To UNC For Sophomore Season

I failed to catch this on the day it was posted – how I don’t know because I stalk TarHeelBlue.com like a peeping Coach K. Needless to say, this is huge. Ed Davis is the man – scientifically speaking – and he could very well be the leader of the Heels next winter. I feel so much better about how we’ll look next year.

Seth Curry Transfers to Duke

3347492272_760951690f

Tragic, but Seth Curry, younger brother of Stephen Curry, will transfer to Duke. He will have to sit out a year, but will be eligible for the 2010-’11 season. The younger Curry led the nation is scoring by a freshman.

One thing I’d like to know, after Stephen blew up the tourney last year as a sophomore, how did so many people miss on recruiting little bro? They definitely win the title of most under-recruited family. And that’s even with the NBA-pedigree of dad, Dell.

I’m a big fan of the Curry family. Stephen was amazing last year in the Big Dance, and Dell played for the Hornets when they were in Charlotte and actually were good. OK so they’re good now again, but I’m talking about when they had Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson and Mugsy Bouges. But this awful decision by Seth has forced me to make him the black sheep. Sorry, Seth. Once a dookie, always a dookie.

Seth’s goal was to play for an ACC school in N.C., and Coach K is probably licking his weaselish chops right now back in Durham, but I’d like to point out one thing: He’s doing it back in Durham. Roy isn’t too worried about playing against Curry right now and probably didn’t have the time to try and woo the guy because he’s in Detroit focusing on other things.

Do NOT trust that weasel!

Great article on ESPN.com right now in which it comes out that gamblers don’t trust Coach K. A must read, soley for that fact.  The picture that accompanies the article is of K and says:

“Don’t trust this man” – Sincerely, Wiseguys
